Entrepreneurship is increasingly transforming from a regional to a global phenomenon. How can individuals and early stage technology companies take advantage?

As entrepreneurs look beyond national borders for the most attractive sources of capital, talent and start-up guidance, start-ups are becoming multinational at an earlier stage.

They’re becoming “micro nationals”.

How it used to work

In the past entrepreneurs first established a successful domestic business before attempting to introduce their idea to a global audience. It took Hewlett Packard 20 years to establish global operations. In 1959 HP set up a marketing organization in Switzerland and a manufacturing plant in Germany. Nowadays ’going global’ is not an aspiration for early stage companies, it’s a starting point.

Who are the entrepreneurs of today?

The profile of today’s ‘entrepreneur without borders’ is likely an individual who is well-educated, multilingual, technologically-savvy, driven and aware of different business models and cultures. He or she may have experience at a global company but certainly understands the importance of the international market.

But you might say “Why go global when you’re a small, early stage company?” That’s easy!

New business models – and benefits

Globalisation and today’s technology have changed the competitive landscape for small and larger players. There are many advantages of being globally minded.

By establishing various aspects of a business in different parts of the world, a company can capitalize on tax structure, workforce, intellectual property protection, legal benefits, regulatory environments and resources around the world to accelerate profitability.

Helping you meet the challenges of globalisation

Recognising the opportunity for entrepreneurs and early-stage companies to prosper in the global marketplace, the Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) was created to target globally-minded, technology entrepreneurs focussed on internationalising their businesses.

These are normally below the radar of VC firms but can offer unique, disruptive intellectual capital with high growth potential.

We have enjoyed considerable success which has brought in significant intellectual capital to the UK, establishing embryonic global headquarters and substantially enhancing Britain’s entrepreneurial gene pool.
