As the Global Entrepreneur Programme’s life sciences and healthcare expert, Toby continues to build networks and support schemes to facilitate breakthrough projects in the sector.
Toby Wilson Waterworth
I was appointed an international Dealmaker with a focus on the healthcare sector in April 2005.
My work with the Global Entrepreneur Programme follows a successful career in start-up, turn-around, development and commercialisation of high growth healthcare related businesses, in the UK and internationally. Through my international network of contracts, I act as a catalyst, bringing together ideas, teams, strategies and funding for global business opportunities.
My strategy and vision
My strategy is to facilitate the creation of world-class sustainable businesses linking opportunities, skills and resources from around the world that would not otherwise connect. Working in this way means I can help build stronger and more robust healthcare businesses that are ultimately of more interest to and more successful with investors and customers.
Working with healthcare firms
Whilst healthcare is now a global industry, I recognise that some companies have funding or aspirations to develop in their local markets only. As a result, I will help such companies to establish fully functioning and funded UK companies to commercialise rights to their IP outside their geographical areas of interest.
This approach provides my clients with additional growth potential for their shareholders, over and above their existing plans, without detracting from them. Central to my criteria is to identify motivated people with the capacity and desire to create and build international world-class businesses.
For those that qualify to be supported by the Global Entrepreneur Program, I will work with them and offer the benefit of my experience plus access to trusted international network of companies, investors and advisors. For me, previous experience of a client is not a key requirement.
Access to successful healthcare executives
To help clients to achieve their aspirations, I have established a group of highly experienced international healthcare executives under the Global Entrepreneur Mentoring Programme (GEMP). The aim of GEMP is to match talent with experience, to enhance clients’ opportunities and provide access to global investors and customers, through the group’s networks.
Global Entrepreneur Mentoring Programme (GEMP). The aim of GEMP is to match talent with experience, to enhance clients’ opportunities and provide access to global investors and customers, through the group’s networks.
The Mentoring Programme comprises of Presidents, Chief Executives, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Medical Officers, Chief Scientific Officers and Business Development Officers from global pharmaceutical and NASDAQ listed companies. Having had successful careers, the group are seeking to put something back into the healthcare sector by offering themselves as advisors, mentors or non-executive directors and providing the benefits of their experience and contacts.
Global sector intelligence
With the GEP being part of UK Trade & Investment, a department of the British Government, I have access to other healthcare experts and resources in other Government departments in the UK (including the NHS, the largest healthcare procurement house in the world), as well as internationally. This enables me to provide clients with critical business information and market developments.
The stock market specialist
I continue to act as a director and adviser to high growth technology companies, a number of who have successfully floated as London’s AIM stock market. I was one of the team who floated biopharmaceutical company Alizyme plc in 1996, one of the first companies to join AIM, growing it from a value of US$20m to over US$400 million over a five-year period, after which it moved up onto the Main market of the London Stock Exchange.
In 2004, I prepared cell-phone content and billing company Bango plc for IPO that floated in 2005 as well as biotechnology platform company Lipoxen Technologies plc, a spin out from The London School of Pharmacy, which successfully floated on AIM in 2006.
Ongoing entrepreneurial activities
I am the founder and Chairman of the emerging international pharmaceutical group Atlantic Healthcare Limited, which is preparing to float on AIM. I have created healthcare spin out companies from Cambridge University, UK, and helped build a number of other private technology companies.
I am a founding member and Chairman of the MIT Enterprise Forum of the United Kingdom (one of 24 global MIT chapters providing education, support and access to an international network of entrepreneurs) and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.
I’ve held senior positions, building a number of the UK’s most successful public listed healthcare companies and has been directly involved in raising over US$200 million in private equity and public company environments.
My promise to clients and the VC community
All enquiries and contact with clients and potential clients are treated with the utmost professionalism. GEP dealmakers respond promptly and act with discretion and in confidence, and I am no different. I look forward to hearing from you.
